Computational Pathology and AI Session

Real-world learnings from the deployment of digital and computational pathology at scale: The Unilabs Story

Unilabs is one of Europe’s leading diagnostics companies, offering a complete range of laboratory, pathology and imaging services to patients across four continents. Join Dr. Rahul Chaudhary and Dr. Thomas Sollie as they relate their first-hand experiences as pathologists deploying and integrating AI into diagnostic processes. Dr. Chaudhary will share the Unilabs story, and their vision of becoming the most digitally-driven diagnostic group. Dr. Sollie will then share the results of the recent study on the potential impact of Proscia’s DermAI on the laboratory’s high-throughput pathology operations and decreased turnaround times that could enable patients to start treatment sooner.

Day 2, Thursday, December 8th | 12:55–1:25 PM BST

Using AI to Understand the Sources of Diagnostic Discordance in Melanocytic Lesions

The digitization of pathology workflows has opened up the potential for enormous benefit from the use of AI to drive diagnostic assistance and workflow optimization. AI models, however, rely not only on high quality images, but also on high quality labels. In many diagnostic domains, there is a high discordance rate among pathologists resulting in uncertain labels with which to build AI models. This study uses an AI model of benign vs suspected malignant melanocytic lesions to disentangle inter-pathologist discordance into its two distinct components of bias and noise, and explore the unique impact of each on AI model development.
